Can't help with the symptoms, Ken, but have you/she considered "Remote
assistance" ?  I use this to assist a number of friends of varying
ages, and it is a Godsend.  If for any reason you cannot use Remote
Assistance, then perhaps consider Skype "Share screen".

I'd warmly recommend www.teamviewer.com, which allows cross-platform
remote assistance. On Windows, the tool doesn't even need an
installation: just download the executable and run it.

When my friend in Australia has problems on his desktop - most often, it is with SeaMonkey since he is relatively new to its complex features - we create a dual connection simultaneously using Skype for voice with TeamViewer for my remote access to his desktop. We save a lot of time sorting things out this way. "A word in time saves nine".
