Can't help with the symptoms, Ken, but have you/she considered "Remote
assistance" ? I use this to assist a number of friends of varying
ages, and it is a Godsend. If for any reason you cannot use Remote
Assistance, then perhaps consider Skype "Share screen".

I'd warmly recommend www.teamviewer.com, which allows cross-platform
remote assistance. On Windows, the tool doesn't even need an
installation: just download the executable and run it.

...video chat via Skype also works wonders for helping.

No replacement for remotely controlling a computer in order to do the
things that the "helpee" can't figure out in the first place.

No argument there...on a Mac desktop sharing and/or mirroring is built into OS X and iChat. So, as myself and my family are mostly Mac users we get to skate on that one and do that easy. But the OP isn't a Mac user...

I've used various verions of VNC in the past to do this. Sitting at my
PC controlling a PC 1,000 miles away kills talking to someone on the
phone and saying: "Err, okay, now what exactly is the mesage you see on
the screen?" Plus, they can see what you're doing and can learn (maybe)
from it.

If you don't have the ability to desktop share (or understand how to do it) video chat by any means is still far and away better than a phone call - particularly if you have a detached web cam(s) and can point it at the screen so the helper can look/watch/see.
