I think I got that "invalid path" message at one point too, but I can't
remember what caused it, or how I fixed it.

Thats odd that you can't see the help pages.
Your problems with Hotmail might be that you don't have cookies enabled. I
can't tell you how to fix that, However. I don't use IE very often, but
when I do it is the 4.0 version for Win95.
