While I have no doubt that the marketeers will hype speed, there's a hell of
a lot more to make a USB modem interesting. First of all, you will
eventually be able to put *most* external peripherals on USB, eliminating
the endless fun of worrying about free IRQs, IO ports and DMA channels on
your system -- something I'm sensitive to this week having just finished my
twice annual wipe-and-reload of Windows 9x on 3 systems.

You also are (relatively) free from limitation on the number of devices
(another nice thing now that I'm trying to hook up a Palm cradle to my
system which already has an external modem and a serial link to my router).

Finally, speed is NEVER a bad thing and some old systems or add-on cards
were based on skimpy UARTs and had trouble with a full-speed 56Kbps modem,
flow control, etc.

So I'd hardly be too sorry for anyone going with USB. I'm looking forward to
the day when there are only a couple of ports off the back of my PC and
"resources" are a thing of the past. You could say I'm "praying" for it too!

Not everything new is a crock.
