Did you try 'man XF86Setup'?  It directs you to:

where Section 7.2 suggests killing gpm.  You'll find the
"Quick-Start Guide" at /var/X11R6/lib/doc/QuickStart.doc
or somewhere similar.

The gpm conflict with X is well known.  I have seen
reference to it in many places.

It's not esoteric.  The gpm process and the X server
are both trying to control the same device.
