You mention two aspects - which one solved the problem? Installing
libboost-dev or patching gdbusxx.am?

That sounds like you did "make" without "make install". Could that be
it?

Or perhaps you started the system's sync-ui with a catalog
in /usr/share/locale while your modified version is elsewhere
(like /usr/local)?

Yes.

No, modifying the .mo file is enough to get the texts inside the sync-ui
translated differently.
