Mathematics is a thing of beauty and an art -- I use it so much in my
weaving and my life. I think of mathematics as "a Swiss army knife for the
brain".

When I first joined this list about six years ago there was a discussion of
tablet weaving terminology and standardization of notation. That was part
of what spurred my initial investigation about expressing all of the
variables mathematically.

I was reminded of my days in the computer business and the double-edged
sword that industry standards were -- the upside being compatibility and
platform independence, the downside being the overhead of defining the
standard and getting it adopted. One of Peter Collingwood's great
contributions to tablet weaving is having set the definition of S- and Z-
threading and forward/backward turning. Unfortunately, if you get *both*
wrong it works the same, so publications that reverse the definitions can
get by. I personally think that any publisher of tablet weaving who
doesn't adhere to Peter's standard is doing us all a great dis-service.

Excellent!
