Sponsored by TWIST - Tablet Weavers International Studies & Techniques

Hi folks,

today I received the current status on the discussion on algorithms and
a tabletweaving application. Let me give my opinions on that (after
drying my eyes from loughing on Eckhard's statement on Windows problems
which I know realy too good as well :-)

The reason for me having such an application are nearly the same Eckhard
described. I have to say first that I also already wrote a small Java
based tool that is able to create an image of a pattern after feeding it
with threading and turning sequences. It works quite good for 4/6/8
holed tablets for warp-twisted bands or double-faced weaves. I did not
try 3/1 twills, other techniques like pebble weaves or missing hole or
other numbers of holes but I can check how my application works. The
reason why I never published this tool is the fact that I do not have
any kind of GUI for that Java thing. I just simply have three text
datasets (one for colors, one for threading and one fur turning
sequences), start the application and it shows the final band.

The reason for writing this tool was a Brika motive I could not weave. I
had an instruction but it did not work for days, whatever I tried. So I
wrote this application to try out different threadings and finally I
found the mistake: While the hole numbering in the pattern instruction
was counter-clockwise I was used to have it clockwise *-)

After having the possibility of my tool I now use it quite often to
"check" new pattern ideas, to see how pattern instructions I got from
other weavers look like when woven, to find out errors in my weavings
etc. So the main reason for me was having some kind of support and help
for my work for "trial-and-error weaving" which is indeed faster and
easier using an application than warping up a band and trying to on a
"living object".

The second reason for me was - like Eckhard says - the challenge to
write such an application. I was a programmer some years ago (today I
still have to do with computers but more on a conceptional and
consultancy side) and I learned Java during my science study at the
university. So you see - we are at least two persons here on the list
with programming / mathematical background.

Let me say that I think it is a very good idea to develop algorithmns
for tablet weaving and having an application. I also tried Eckhard's
thingy which I think is very great work! If we want to start something
new here - including ideas like having a standard notation or standard
kind of input structure for any kind of application - I will be very
interested and willing to help whereever I can.

Regards from sunny and warm Aachen/Germany (which is quite seldom here
;-)
