I'm not sure I follow you. As far as I can tell, automatic
contact-specific templates don't work *at all* if you don't have "use
specific template..." checked. That is to say: if I have a contact
with a template but I do *not* check "use specific template...", then
that template will *never* show up -- it won't matter whether I
select the addressee and then create New Mail, or whether I create New
Mail and then select my addressee. Whereas the problem I have is that
the templates work if I select the addressee first, but not second.

Is that true? I mean, I have only one AB, and it is my default (just
made sure), but during one of my efforts to see if I could figure out
what was happening, I created a dummy address with a dummy template in
one of the ABs that came with the program (Bigfoot). The template
worked just like the templates in my default AB.

*grin* it's that elusive second option ("compose new message then
select address book") that I just can't get working for me
