Seems like you and your friend have given reasonable people something to think about. And the extremes to scream about. I think there was a book a few years ago called the 2% Solution. The author gave many examples of common ground on many issues that most people say they could accept and get behind.

I am a self avowed Chicago-Liberal and recovering Cub fan. However my views on gun control have moderated over the last few years.

Every year my wife and I spend a lot of time on Beaver Island in Michigan (Going back up in about a week again ;-) ). On B.I. about 90% of the year round residents hunt. Mostly because they depend on hunting to help to feed their families. The carpenter who I have hired on and off for the last two years while we finish the house is a real backwoodsman (He has no running water, off the grid and about 2 miles down a singletrack of a dirt road). He builds muskets, he has built some from scratch - including drilling the barrel. They are beautiful weapons. He eats anything he hunts including squirrels and he is dismissive of the off-islanders who come to BI just looking for a trophy. As you might imagine he and I have had some wing-ding discussions about gun rights.

But, on BI every person, even my backwoods friend is really part of a community and they do not have the sense of isolation we find today in most of our high schools and in many communities. The person I mentioned is against gun control, but only because he has come to believe that all gun control efforts are also aimed at his hunting & hobby guns. In our discussions I find that we have remarkable common ground. I see no reason for the government to control or limit his use of firearms and he sees no reason to allow a person to go into gunshow and with no background check buy enough guns to arm a street gang. Or for most people in the US to own an advanced military weapons.

I'd be happy if we could somehow make it harder for people to make a profit selling to felons and to be sure anyone buying a gun is well trained in it's use.

    Guys:

I do not believe in gun control, I don't think you can control guns.
I feel that if someone wants a gun bad enough they will get one,
no matter what the laws are. If you don't want to own a gun,
fine, I don't care, but I should have the right and anybody should
have the right to own gun. Not necessarily combat type weapons.
But I like to shoot and hunt, I had guns since I was 7 years old.
I also started driving then, by myself.
