Evil is, frankly, just too trite and vague a term for any rational discussion
of the topic. I prefer to rate my experience with corporations based on how
much they display utter indifference to my satisfaction. By that rubric,
Microsoft is far more "evil" than Apple — Microsoft's entire business model is
predicated on how well it serves the priestly IT cult it has built and nurtured
throughout corporate America rather than being motivated by the user experience
of day-to-day users of their software and products. One could argue that
Microsoft has strengthened its corporate IT position specifically by making its
products opaque and so reliant on the daily intervention of IT departments to
keep their companies nominally productive.

Naturally, as Google and Apple work to democratize the use of and access to
more productive technology, Microsoft is finding that its own closed model is
rapidly becoming obsolete and irrelevant. I have many friends who work at high
positions in Microsoft development who pretty much confirm for me that its
corporate culture is antithetical to true innovation and only encourages the
type of groupthink that continues to mire down what was once an agile if
autocratic corporation.

Apple, on the other hand, is mission-driven by its desire to create pleasing,
productive and useful user experiences. You can argue that it achieves this at
the cost of "openness" (itself a vague standard if what you're aiming for is
overall quality and productivity by end-users rather than developers), but it's
clear that Apple has been the thought leader in the industry since 1984.

Regards,
/carlos
