I totally agree.  On the spectrum of feature<->failure I'd err toward the 
latter.  In fact, as a result of this intriguing exercise, I'm filing 
before/after under a similar heading as "goto", "eval" and "important!"

So let me say this, Josiah: you need a solution that does not use CSS 
before/after tricks.
