The line input impedance of the Kairn is 24K.

IF there was enough DC apearing at the Kairn inputs to disturb the
Touch it will be measurable with a decent multimeter.

Can I just check something? - Is the distortion always only in the same
one channel of the Kairn?

All the evidence so far points to a DC issue as others have noted.
If I recall correctly the Kairn is DC-coupled, meaning it has no
capacitors in the signal chain. Any DC from a source WILL pass into it.
Of course, there should be no DC...

However, I also recall that the Kairn tape loop has a high-pass filter
in it that will remove DC and very low frequencies (like <5 Hz).

So as an experiment, try connecting the tape outputs directly to the
tape inputs with an RCA cable, connect Touch to another input (say
Tuner or Aux) and then listening to the Tape input (you have to set the
Tape to "record" which ever input the Touch is in).

One off-topic thought you should probably bear in mind - there is a
battery in the Kairn that can leak after many years of use. The battery
is just behind the front panel and retains the setup/config memory. It
is a fair way away from the audio circuitry. The battery will
eventually die (you get an error message displayed) or leak. They all
do. If you haven't had the battery replaced in the last 5 years (or
ever) you should get that done soon. If the leak is bad it can damage
surrounding components - usually the first sign of a leak is problems
with the IR control.

Replacing the battery (which is not mentioned in the literature)
requires careful disassembly and some soldering... fortunately the
bateries themselves are still readily available.

I don't believe this is anything to do with your current issue - I'm
just pointing it out in case you weren't aware.
