It is Free Software, like Mozilla's, MySQL, PostgreSQL, X, among others. In all of these cases you also end up helping their proprietary siblings that share code with them. If that's a problem for you, then you shouldn't translate them (and you should also avoid all software with BSD and MIT licenses).
But your work is still helping Free Software.
BTW, for Sun to release a StarOffice program they usually have to
translate another 40 000 strings thanks to the proprietary parts of it.
Nothing useful there, I just thought it was an interesting note.
