I have seen this method of using MSGID and MSGSTR before, but as far as I know, it is a rather uncommon interpretation (and implementation) of the PO standard. If I remember correctly, I have encountered it as well when I had tested Pootle. Pootle does not support this interpretation of PO. Pootle (and certain checks on the source text by the Translate Toolkit) requires PO files in this format: msgid "Full Address" msgstr "" (and the translation goes into the MSGSTR section) > We have added languages to the project using the same .po file but with > empty msgstr: > msgid "addressField" > msgstr "" Yes, and this is why this would be a strange interpretation of the PO format. How are translators supposed to know what the source text of "addressField" is? So I can see why you are confused -- you are using a non-standard (or, at least an uncommon) implementation of the PO file format.
