There was some discussion on the Gettext list about introducing this feature more formally. e.g. something like msgstr[fr] or similar. Freidel created a tool to address this while training in West Africa. It transforms an English POT file into a B POT file which can then be translated B->C then does A+C to create a C po file. Yes in the current design you would lose TM and glossary functionality.
