People, I would like to revisit this subject as I think that there may be some valid points for this kind of functionality in Pootle, particularly for on-line translations.
It would be quite handy to have an 'alternative msgid' displayed. Why? Here are some reasons: 1) Allows a B->C translator to collaborate in an A-based POT 2) Interlanguage coherence. Again, B-C speakers can cross-review translations from A-B & A-C side by side in order to ensure that they both make sense and that both have similar spirit. 3) Regional/National languages. Generating and verifying sub-languages (ie: pt from pt_BR, es_UY from es_AR or es_MX) would be much simpler. 4) In our case we are supporting a lot of small applications done by lots of different developers and we are bound to have the 'tokenization' of the msgids. IOW, shit happens. This 'alternative msgid' could be accomplished by having a pull-down in the view and edit screens with the list of available languages plus the PO/POT (default). If the chosen language lacks a translation, then the real msgid would be displayed. I'm guessing that this impacts negatively in the use and practicality of the terminology project; and of course, a new level of complexity in the handling of the files... Personally, I think it would definitely broaden the available translator base for 'less global languages'... ie: English-Quechua translators willing to collaborate will be hard to come by, and in some cases they may not even exist; but Spanish-Quechua translators are much more likely. It's not optimal, but then the Aymara-Quechua translator can review it too... ;) Comments?
