I own a 680 that I have sent back to Palm UK via friend for repair (dropped
it and cracked the screen).

Its insured for 2.99 a month (UK Pounds) but my mate had so much trouble
getting through to Palm that it is still back there awaiting my return. To
be honest, the battery life was so poor (had to buy a 2nd battery and
charger to address it) that I am not sorry to see the back of it. My
intention is to use it for the TomTom Navigator in the car and nothing else.

I am now using my old 650, which apart from the sound (had to purchase
VolumeCare to address that issue), worked fine until the touch screen
failed. Palm wanted 120 Pounds to repair it. I told them to shove it but
managed to get it repaired here in Thailand for 30 quid (although the touch
screen sync wanders and I have to resync every couple of days).

Until now, I didn't know of any viable alternative so was thinking of trying
the iPhone but as it does not support MS Office it would not 'fit the bill'.
Rumours that the new model due out next week might, regenerated my interest.

Now you tell me about the Blackberry, it looks like I might be finally able
to own a phone that is everything that a Palm should have been.

Not only that, it will run the apps that I have already purchased so that is
even better. Only downside is that I love the size of the iPhone screen and
its ability to double as an iPod (16gig memory and maybe higher next week)

Jomo, which device are you now using?

I have stuck with palm for years until this January when I converted to the
Blackberry. I've tried all other devices (WinMob, etc) and always felt the
loyalty to go back to palm. I missed the palm then. But now I could care
less about palm. They went from a solid device in the early PDAs to just
plain crappy smartphones. The Treo 680 was the worst and that's what broke
my camel's back.

Cheers Roger

Any other previous Palm issues (while I am picking your brain)

Like (IIRC)

Crap screen in bright daylight (180)

Poor key lettering and poor key backlight (good on the 180, a nice bright
green - fubared on the 600, an insipid blue with smudgy lettering)

Poor sound (good on the 600 - ruined on the 650)

Battery life (680) - been there!

Poor customer service (all models)

Re. the trackball - I have no problems there as I tend to want to use the 4
way rocker which does not navigate well in all apps - take Docs to Go for
example, it jumps from the top to the bottom of the screen instead of
scrolling progressively down the files / cells

For me, my love affair with the touch screen ended when it failed and on a
hard rest (whilst hoping to solve the issue), prevented me from getting any
further than the touch screen sync on reboot, therefore rendering the phone
useless
