DAVEH: Assuming you are referring to God the Father: As man is, God once was is a popular LDS belief.

Michael D: Yeah, but my interest is in how did he become such?
If you are referring to God the Son: Jesus was created (born) as spirit in the pre-mortal existance as we were. He was a 'God' there due to the nature of his relationship with our Father in Heaven (Jesus being the firstborn of the spirits) and the work he was foreordained to do for his Father.
and how did he become exalted to be God? No... How did the Father become God...having been once a man...

DAVEH:  I don't have a definitive answer, Michael.  But if you want me to speculate, I would say our Heavenly Father became exalted in the same way his Only Begotten Son became exalted.
