From what you said, I get the idea that how it works (function/purpose) is more important than how it looks, unless something in the appearance, in this case color, actually performs a function (blue functions as a reminder).
Assuming for a moment that I am close to being on target, let me try a stab at the numbers thing. The age of Methusilah would be functional, a part of a geneology that would be vital to determining the age of an era, whereas a body count in a battle would be non functional because the important thing would be who won, not whether 989 or 1000 were killed.
Do I get a cigar, or am I hopelessly out of step?
