First every boats fuel plumbing is different. Often they have been changed by year or when retanked, repowered. etc. Two thoughts. One you may have a process where the tanks self level allowing fuel to run between the forward tanks and the mid tanks, unless shut off. The other bad thought is you are returning to a tank which has no draw and overflowing the tank overboard. I assume that's not it. Otherwise the systems generally allow you to return to any tank, and draw from any tank. Mine were well marked.
Also my fuel gauges read very differently whether the bow is up or level. Other than that you have a mystery.
