I'd like to build a server to hold all my (owned) ripped, and to-be-ripped digital media.
I want it to be a real server-- no application s/w, minimal audio and video (probably will run headless), etc.-- and provide at least 3 TB file space. I would like it to run server kinds of stuff (e.g., FTP, firewall, etc.), and especially slim server. I think s/w/ RAID will be just fine with Linux (don't know what distro, yet), so am not anticipating needing a h/w RAID card. (Don't ask me what my backup solution will be. I don't yet know how to handle backing up 3 - 5 TB. But, at least I have the original media in case of emergency.) So (finally) the question is, "What motherboard?". I'd like lots of SATA headers (8 would be nice). A couple IDE headers for system drives. Low power consumption is desirable (want to just leave it running 24x7 downstairs in the equip. room [I have cat5e drops pretty much everywhere in the house]). Separate bus for onboard gigabit ethernet (jumbo packet capable). Reliability and stability are much more important than performance. Doesn't have to be particularly new, except that maybe only newer boards (??) have good (distinct) bus structure for LAN, disk drives, and peripherals. I am in process of "doing my own homework" and searching manufacturer web sites for suitable candidates, but, maybe someone knows right off, or has some valuable experience they would be willing to share. Thank you.
