I'm a linux noob myself, but I can't help thinking that you must be
missing something. From what I gather, installing a SBServer on a linux
system using one of the precompiled versions here should be a short
command line or two. I have a vortexbox system (which is Fedora linux)
and it is plug and play. I've even removed and reinstalled SbB 7.6.2
recently. The various linux flavors are always listed under the windows
and OS versions. No compiling required:

Give some serious thoughts about vortexbox. You'll go to this site.
Download the ISO. Create a disk from it. Stick the disk in your old
computer's harddrive. Reboot, follow a couple of instructions, and
you'll shortly have an uptodate fedora linux system with the most
recent SbS. And a webGUI for doing updates, etc. All requiring zero
linux knowledge.
