I used the one people were recommending elsewhere as a light, new,
Linux that would be easy to keep up to date. I also spent almost a
whole week installing it, learning a bit about it, and sorting most
things out on a separate old laptop (also from 2003). This had given
me a little confidence that I could sort out the trivial matter of
Squeezebox on the same OS, although I have to admit that my attempt to
install Squeezeplay on the laptop failed with graphics problems
(apparently not uncommon - another reason I am suspicious of Logitech
and Linux).

Little did I know the peculiarities of each flavour would cause me such
grief.

I had indeed misunderstood the meaning of Vortebox. Thanks for the
information. I'll think about it, but I'm really not happy about the
idea of trying to support 2 flavours of Linux. One is more than
enough.
