Sadly the discs on my old desktop are far too small, and buying new
discs for such an old IDE_based system (2003) that might fail soon for
other reasons doesn't seem like a sound investment.  I have USB discs
but was given the impression that they wouldn't work too well as
primary (as opposed to backup) drives.

Server on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, 2 CPU, 2GHz, 4GB, FLAC files. Touch
on Ethernet (in another room).  Analogue out over 'a bit of wire' to
ageing Quad Hi-Fi. An old (wireless) laptop controls the server using
Chrome.
