I think the suggestion is not to have two different Linux versions
around, but rather to switch entirely to a more stable, user-friendly
distribution. Both laptop and desktop. Sticking with something that has
given you so many problems just because you've faced down so many
problems borders on masochism. Backup your data and switch to something
that fits your Linux experience level and desire not to tinker. It may
be an Ubuntu version of Mint, Ubuntu itself, or something else. Even MS
Windows.
