However, my 2003 laptop was creaking under Windows, so a lightweight Linux seemed the way to go. It's now stable and works (apart from the modem which I will probably never use again anyway). My attempted move to Linux on my old spare desktop was for much the same reason, but also to see whether running it as an SB server was practical. Running SBS on my everyday Windows desktop is OK, but does occasionally cause difficulties, and a separation of duties seemed worth pursuing. I have now given up on the idea - the old desktop will go to charity. Apart from the linux issues - now gone into enough on this thread - I'd have problems getting a large disk into it. People advise against using a large external USB disk, but the PC is old enough that it doesn't support SATA, which most modern drives require. I'm sorry if my reluctance to try other solutions seems ungrateful. I really do appreciate the help people have given me on this thread. Thanks a lot. -- PasTim Server on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, 2 CPU, 2GHz, 4GB, FLAC files. Touch on Ethernet (in another room). Analogue out over 'a bit of wire' to ageing Quad Hi-Fi.
