Mark mentions Cad files.
My own experiences involving frustration and vast periods of time-wasted
have left me with an idea that maybe the Cad folk simply don't want anyone
else to play with their files in any way at all. Perhaps its some kind of
isolationist dependency thing on the part of their marketing strategy folk
or something.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Why else would they omit 3ds export
in their latest version... people have to use the latest acad 3d stuff, not
some external renderer.
Those files didn't work with RS anyway... too old version ;)
Of course there are always workarounds, like the Max dwg import - useful
3ds export. But even then, I often end up with crap that's not really
useful for the models.
Once, I noticed mysterious walls in the room... they appeared to be
extruded CAD letters and numbers :)
good luck,

Tip of the day: use a big hollow one-capped cylinder as special lightsource
(area light) to light your outdoor scenes. The effect is like ambient
occlusion and render times are reasonable. Low quality lightsource (3-4)
and high stochastic AA. It's useful for stills but probably too slow for
animations...
