  Yes , World Construction Set could ex/import in 16 bit and the
results were much better than those horrible looking 8 bit DEM's
that looked like some kind of terrace farming experiment .

  Great idea ! Old trick in WCS was to use a bit of fractal noise
to disguise the stepping , but smoothing would be much better ,
then add whatever you want once your mesh had the steps removed .
