That could well be it. 
The part I am most interested in atm is which (free) software you used to
turn the rendered result into a VR panorama. I have experimented with Hugin,
which produces a nice panorama, but that's it, no mapping to cubes or to
cylinders. Perhaps the best way is to look for a program that will convert
the tiff from Hugin into a QTVR file?
