Yet one remark on this idea. Something that might be an interesting request
to Vesa and Juha.
In Cinema 4D there's a shader that is called "proximal". This shader detects
the distance to chosen objects, either the entire object or it's points or
edges. The closer the object the higher the value returned (fall off can be
adjusted). 

But what's most important: This shader is much, much faster than AO! 

I've seen this shader used to fake foam around a boat on a water surface.
Myself, I used it once in a tutorial about a falling logo that changes the
color and triggers particles when the it touches the floor.
