Figured since there was an "Italic" icon on the toolbar between the "Bold" and the Underline" that that was where it was done. I tried selecting, then "Format", "Character" - no italic produced that way, either, even though under "Format", "Character" I specifically selected (from the list) and applied "Italic". It doesn't work whether I invoke it, then type, either. This is really bizarre. And I'm not using some off-the-wall obscure font, either - it's the good old default Bitstream Vera Serif 12.
