I think that your installation may be corrupt. Hard disk starting to go
is one possible concern. I don't know if there is a utility to verify
files on a hard disk in Linux except to do a diff with a backup?

Depends on the upgrade plans. Upgrade to a new box and or updated OS
with a newer version of OO.o will fix the issue.
