I'm afraid an upgrade to a new version of OOo isn't likely to help,
because there's no known issue about this. If you create a new document
using the distributed default templates, and both the fonts you like
imposed directly on the text, do you get the same weird behavior? If
not, there's probably something different about the styles you're using
that is creating the situation. If it still happens, you could send us
your test document -- ODF files usually come through OK on the list. The
original would be good, too, if it's not private.

So far as I am aware, I am not using any default templates, nor
styles for that matter. Despite doing a fair volume of text editing
on a regular basis, I don't have anything anywhere near the frequency of
similar boilerplate that would induce me to cede control of the
appearance of my pages to the software. I turn off annoying stuff
like standard capitalizing of the first character in a line,
and automatic numbering with its own ideas about indents.
I despise that kind of interference. It's the one thing that makes
me wish I still had Word Perfect with its Reveal Codes. :-)
About the only "auto"-thing I can stand to leave on is auto-spell-check,
because it's extremely handy for catching typos.
I'm an extremely good speller, but a horribly untrained typist.
So I have skipped templates and styles, as far as I know. If they're
operating it is decidedly without my consent :-)
There's a built-in default template, and default page, paragraph, and
character styles, that are always in effect -- although direct
formatting (like what you're trying to do with the icon) should always
override them. But your answer here clears up a lot of possibilities,
because you certainly haven't modified any of the template and style
stuff; it should all be vanilla from your distribution.
I've looked through the Help a lot, and don't see anything in there
that would connect italicization with styles or templates. But then
I freely confess I know little about either one.
I can always do up a sample file and attach it if you think that
might be helpful.
Thanks,
Brewster
A sample file definitely seems like a good idea, though for best effect
somebody else using your distro should test it. (I'm not sure how many
Core2 users there are here, haven't noticed any.) There's also
reinstalling or upgrading in case, as was mentioned by another response,
you somehow have a corrupted installation.
