So far as I am aware, I am not using any default templates, nor
styles for that matter. Despite doing a fair volume of text editing
on a regular basis, I don't have anything anywhere near the frequency of
similar boilerplate that would induce me to cede control of the
appearance of my pages to the software. I turn off annoying stuff
like standard capitalizing of the first character in a line,
and automatic numbering with its own ideas about indents.
I despise that kind of interference. It's the one thing that makes
me wish I still had Word Perfect with its Reveal Codes. :-)
About the only "auto"-thing I can stand to leave on is auto-spell-check,
because it's extremely handy for catching typos.
I'm an extremely good speller, but a horribly untrained typist.
So I have skipped templates and styles, as far as I know. If they're
operating it is decidedly without my consent :-)
I've looked through the Help a lot, and don't see anything in there
that would connect italicization with styles or templates. But then
I freely confess I know little about either one.
I can always do up a sample file and attach it if you think that
might be helpful.

I would check your fonts. The Regular, Bold and Italics are different
fonts. Like roman, *Roman Bold*, & /Roman Italics/.
Do you see the bold and italics in the last sentence. You may have lost
some fonts. It could be something else but I don't know what.
