Hadn't thought of that. Figured since there was an "Italic"
icon on the toolbar between the "Bold" and the Underline"
that that was where it was done.

I tried selecting, then "Format", "Character" - no italic
produced that way, either, even though under "Format", "Character"
I specifically selected (from the list) and applied "Italic".

It doesn't work whether I invoke it, then type, either.

This is really bizarre. And I'm not using some off-the-wall
obscure font, either - it's the good old default Bitstream Vera
Serif 12.

The icon usually works (never seen any reports of this kind of behavior before), as does the Format > Character. Do the bolding and underlining icons work? What happens if you change to a different font temporarily, like Times New Roman?

Changed to Frys Baskerville BT - same result. For some unaccountable
reason my lengthy list of fonts from the original Core2 does not
include Times New Roman. I should clarify - same lack of response
from both the icon *and* from "Format", "Character".

BTW now that I look at Baskerville again I may make it my default font
as I had back in the WP/DOS days. It really is a very readable typeface.

The "bold" and "underline" icons work as you would expect - as on-off
toggles either to modify existing highlighted text or pre-typing on,
post-typing off.
This is decidedly strange. But maybe a blessing in disguise if it forces
me to accelerate my upgrade plans :-)

I'm afraid an upgrade to a new version of OOo isn't likely to help, because there's no known issue about this. If you create a new document using the distributed default templates, and both the fonts you like imposed directly on the text, do you get the same weird behavior? If not, there's probably something different about the styles you're using that is creating the situation. If it still happens, you could send us your test document -- ODF files usually come through OK on the list. The original would be good, too, if it's not private.
