But he didn't get the reply so he can't read it. Replies to
[email protected] do ***not\*** go to unsubscribed posters unless

If by not getting a reply you mean one sent to him directly that's true.
From what little I've looked at Gmane it appeared as though it was
possible to post from there. If true, he can access the list to post
and read replies without being subscribed.
You have to register with Gmane for each list you post to
" 1. The first time you post something to a newsgroup, Gmane spools
the message and sends you an email asking you to respond.
2. You press "reply" in your favorite mail reader, and Gmane
registers this authorization. "
What am I missing?
If you do not CC them, they are not going to see your reply to their post.
The non-subscribed posters do not know about Gmane and are not posting
from Gmane. They probably know nothing about newsgroups in general.
