I agree with Michele that ignoring people's messages may not be the most
welcoming of choices. 

Would the more experienced users simply be willing to update subject lines?
For example:

        The incoming subject line:

                Newbie here

        which is clearly meaningless, could be updated, say, to:

                Opening MS Office files in OO (WAS: Newbie here)

        or whatever the actual topic is.

I do this sort of renaming routinely in several discussion groups I moderate
(on different subject matter), and it seems to work quite well. My new
subject line simply names and begins a new thread, which anyone can then
follow. And by including the original subject line in my "WAS clause", I
allow the original author to find my response to his/her original inquiry.

I've updated the subject line for this thread, which I find uninformative,
as an example of what I mean. 

How about this idea?

I think we are in agreement on what we want to achieve, but "punishing" the
poor inexperienced users by ignoring their messages still does not sound
right.
