Well....let's see....I think I can spell "stuck exhaust valve", but I hope I
don't have to fix one. Sorry guys, although I love my max dearly, my
mechanical skills are more oriented to repairing computer network problems
than they are to lapping valves. So I apologize. I am lucky enough to have a
good mechanic as a friend however, and am hoping that with your expertise and
his mechanical ability I can once again get back to enjoying the beast in
ignorant bliss.
In answer to the several questions that were posed:
Bike has been rejetted and is running Cobra pipes (dont know the size jet was
used, as I am not the original owner, and he is unavailable...that's one of
the things I hoped to discover when we tear down the carbs).
Bike has 10,500 miles....less than half the recommended 26,000 mile
maintenance interval for valves.
Offending cylinder is #2.
Haven't got a compression reading yet....just started working on this thing
and planned to do it this weekend also.
Had vacuum on the carb....just couldn't get it in line with the others.
Plugs don't look bad at all. Go figure. No difference in appearance between
#2 and the rest of them either. (BTW...replaced them all)
Regarding the dealer....their solution was $210 to tear the carbs down and
take a look.
So, what I hear you guys saying is that it doesn't sound like a carb problem
at all. I got the idea that it might be from some of the other posts on this
list which seemed to relate similar symptoms that cleared up with either
adjusting float level or blowing out the primaries. I was hoping it would be
this simple, but it figures it's not.
Regarding the suggestion that "So either you have a big leak on the exhaust
valve, (a
stuck intake valve would still create vacuum)...", if I read this right, if
am getting vacuum then it's NOT the exhaust valve. And since I am getting
enough vacuum to register OK on the synch gauge (can get it adjusted "close"
to the others, just not close enough...either higher or lower but not the
same), then it's NOT a valve?????
Well, if any of the additional information sparks any other thoughts about
what it might be, I'd appreciate hearing any other suggestions (or a
confirmation that it still sounds like a bad valve or a leak).
Thanks,
Tom
