I have a 5.7 (350) engine in my truck too. Probably the best motor =
Chevy ever made. It has 200,000 plus miles on it now and still going, =
just like the energizer bunny. Yes it burns a little oil between =
changes, but it still gets the job done.
I've been thinking myself about rebuilding it before I drop a valve or =
something and ruin it, or just chenge the engine out to save time. I've =
priced an engine at Advance Auto Parts (short block- minus heads), with =
a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty for $825.79 out the door, for a =
crate motor from my local Chevy dealer the same engine (NEW) would cost =
me $1986.95 with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. I help a friend rebuild =
his and it cost about $400.00 doing all the work. Of course he didn't =
get the heads done or the block flushed either, but he's been driving it =
for four/five months now, and seem to be doing fine. If I was to go the =
rebuild route, which I have priced because I would like to make it into =
a 383, plus get the engine block magna fluxed balanced and blueprinted, =
heads reworked (polished/ported), it will cost me almost $1400.00 with =
no warranty.=20
At this point I'm still undecided on what I will do, when the time =
comes, because I like the idea of having 435HP under the hood, but my =
wallet isn't thick enough right now.=20

About my engine: I've the 5.7 liter gas engine, working a 3-speed =
automatic
(no overdrive) , and I'm at 119,000 actual miles. My mileage is =
acceptable,
    and things seem strong. .

My question: I'm getting some real miles on this power plant! If I =
am to
budget engine replacement this year, I need to establish that now =
for budget
planning reasons. I am thinking if I do replace an engine this year, =
do I:

    A) get a Crate Engine? or a rebuild? Reliability takes president =
over cost

    B) What the heck is a crate engine? Is it a complete engine, or a =
block
bearing & crank set or ... with heads or what? Do I get this from a
dealership? I am more for replacing more than less.
    C) What's a ball park figure I should prepare myself for? And then =
installed?
Remember I am fine right now, but need to plan for the future, and =
what to
start a budget line now for the future.

I used to like Fram filters. I don't anymore. I found the anti drainback
valve that was super 20 years ago now fails in a couple thousand miles.
I don't like dry engine starts. There is an extended discussion of oil
filters at:
http://www.frankhunt.com/FRANK/corvette/articles/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html
or http://www.dorianyeager.com/oilfilterstudy1.html

Fram didn't do well in the examination. Too much paper where there
should be something more substantial.

Dear fellow VAC members,
You should check out Dan Burke's site: Airstreamtrailers.com go to
vintagevacations and check out the '46 "Spartan" that they restored! Many
thanks to Dan and all the work he did to put that together.
Also we would like to have a slide show of our Airstream project to help
others see whjat we've been working on with our '65 Airtream Trade Wind Twin
24'. Should we figure out how to do that thru our aol provider or what? Maybe
Dan will let us put it on his site? Thanks, Stuart and bonnie Resor. PS
please check the notices board about the Airstream meet at our "Ranch" in
Borrego Springs, Ca. Or send us a note and we'll email info to you directly.

Hi,

Here is a wide assortment of folding chairs, AND a cheap place to buy
the coveted silver navy chair, a must have for the silver seed crowd.

Subject: Was: Info On Engines now Land Yatch Port o' Call

Folks has asked about Port o' Call where I recently stayed in Melbourne Fla.
Built by volunteers of the WBCCI several years ago it is in a very good urban
location. I noted that it was right across the street from an airport, but it
really wasn't noisy at all. Its close to all things suburban; malls, hardware
stores, dealerships, Walmarts &c. The beaches are less than 5 miles away. I
prefer more bucolic settings myself but I was surprised how much I liked the
small town feel of Melbourne, and Port o' Call.

This was until recently an Airstream Exclusive park, but now any self
contained unit can park by day week month or year, with yearly leases really
a bargain if you can stay for the winter. Easily 90% occupancy is by
Airstreamers.

This is an old school park which means every one is friendly neighborly and
kind. It is very quiet, orderly, with well manicured lots and flowers
everywhere. Almost every lot comes with a small storage shed, and cement pad
and or drive. 5 point hooks can be had, with a call to the cable and
telephone companies, but 30 amps was the lot limit. Rates were daily $15,
weekly? Monthly 300, with metered electric; yearly depends on the lot. There
are lot of vacancies 1-800- 982-0255 is the number Mon-Fri 9am to 4pm Closed
12-1pm for lunch. There is a website with pictures but I can't recall the
address
And many volunteer groups organize a host of activities every day. For
example,
Propane is Co-op purchased and made available at cost with a squad of
volunteers making weekly pick ups and drop offs of tanks. It is a wonderfully
democratic system, steep in the best traditions and ethics of the Wally Byam
Caravan Club International, and is very much the model park as described in
Galloping Bungalows.

But if it sounds too good to be true, it may be, because the long term lease
on the land is up in 2004, and folks aren't sure if it will survive. The site
is property of the Airport and is leased to the Port O' Call shareholders. If
the new lease requires lot prices to go up very much many folks will be lost.
At 40 I was the young pup of the whole place despite several other VAC
Airstreams. Many folks are really getting on in years and incomes are rather
fixed for some. But everyone went out of their way to be welcoming and
friendly. This park is a great way to sample a vanishing way of life, The
Florida Trailer Park. As a person who does many different eras of living
history, I felt lucky to have experienced it, and will do so again, before it
and their ilk disappear. I don't think I have felt so much of a community in
many years.

Having and restoring an Airstream is fun. Full Timing a great way of life,
and doing in a commune of Airstreams was terrific.
