I have been working on this trailer ('71 Safari) for a year and a half. Put
thousands of dollars into it.
Took it out twice. Last time we could smell gas inside near the water
heater.
So I hooked up the hose at the house, lit the water heater and let it run.
Sprayed the connections with soapy water and found no leaks.
So I left it running and went into the house. When I went back out, water
was running out the bottom of the trailer everywhere. Shut the water off
and went inside to find the entire floor flooded.
I give up...

I think I need to learn to work with aluminum. Do you have a shop with a
brake etc ?
And can you get the copper anodized aluminum trim anywhere ?

Oh Geez, that's not fair !
I'm afraid I would take it to the nearest Decent RV place and say fix
it. Plumbing and Gas are too much for me, well so far anyway.
If you put the tongue jack all the way up or down, most of the water
will go away.
Sympathies,

Daisy,
Would that be 'copper colored' anodized aluminum?
I know that aladine (sp?) will turn aluminum a range of colors from =
light gold to blue. Depends how long you leave it in the solution. I =
will say though that you only need a light coloring from this acid which =
then forms a protective oxide to protect the metal. Deeper color means =
more oxide in this case.
Another reason to dip it in aladine? is to give primer paint a good =
adhere to the etching from the solution.

Subject: Re: Argosy Models
The Argosy production run was in two groups. The more familiar round style was
built from 1972 (as a 73 model) until 1979. Both a motorhome and travel trailer
were built during this time under the Argosy name. There are some possible 80's
models of the round style. The 1979 model year was the changeover year for the
motorhome. That year Airstream built 3 versions, the last of the Argosy's, a
painted Airstream and an Airstream "silver bullet".
The second run started as a 1986 model. It was the first of the square built
coaches. It was a metal skinned coach with a mustard and black color scheme. It
was also built in 1987. In 1988 Airstream changed to a composite fiberglass wall
construction, changed the color to gray and called it an "Airstream". Thus was
born the infamous "Squarestream". The club at the time had a fit. After the 1989
model year Airstream changed the name to Landyacht and continued to build them
into 1992. The 1988-89 time frame was also Airstream's first experiment with
fifth wheels.

Tim, what can I say? It hopefully will not seem quite so demoralizing
tomorrow. Every once in a while it's probably a good idea to take a look
back and reflect on how much you have accomplished in the past year and a
half. One thing is for sure. There isn't as much to be done now as there was
when you started. Protect your investment and finish the job. Nobody knows
that ' 71 Safari like you do or will value it like you do. You have a lot of
friends on the list for whatever help we can be.

I'm sure I won't give up. I am a glutton for punishment ;-)
Do these vintage trailers ever just work? Or is it use it one week, =
work on it for months, use it a week, work on it......
I don't know yet where the water is coming from since I just rushed to =
turn it off and mop it up. I also raised it as per Daisy's suggestion =

There are some rubber hoses that some previous owner replaced bad copper =
with. I had been in the process of replacing some dried up hoses on the =
water pump input.
Are rubber hoses with clamps and acceptable repair?
I have to wait until I have some time to move the couches and such out =
of the way and have someone turn the hose on briefly so I can find the =
problem. Not looking forward to that ;-(

Hello Tim,
Never give up! I have washed my Airstreams from the inside out many
times over the years, at least it's clean! I have run into many problems
and setbacks over the years but refuse to give up. My 68 has new skin
water leaks, popping rivets on the front and my 75 Travelall smoked some
wires this weekend. It's a hobby and not my job, so all I have is time
and time working on the Airstream adds time to my life span, sort of
like fishing, for each minute you fish you add 3 to your life. Step
back, drink a beer and ponder the situation.

I have been working on this trailer ('71 Safari) for a year and a half.
Put
thousands of dollars into it.
Took it out twice. Last time we could smell gas inside near the water
heater.
So I hooked up the hose at the house, lit the water heater and let it
run.
Sprayed the connections with soapy water and found no leaks.
So I left it running and went into the house. When I went back out,
water
was running out the bottom of the trailer everywhere. Shut the water
off
and went inside to find the entire floor flooded.
I give up...

Tim,
Don't give up! I've done a couple of old Airstreams now and find that some
systems just don't work with a mix of old and new. My old water heater was
intact, but the copper pipes had all been stretched from having water in
them over several winters. I tried to splice new copper and plastic at
several locations, but found that the copper just didn't fit anything
available. I'm sure that's why the PO used rubber hoses, nothing else would
fit. Anyway, I decided to scrap the entire water system and put a new one
in. When trying to disconnect the water heater, I quickly found that the
entire heater was rotted out. The input and output pipes easily broke off
with little pressure. The whole system was a pile of rust. Sounds like
your system is prime for a replacement, not a patch repair. Recommend a new
water heater with all new pipes. It's not that difficult and you will be
worry free for years.
Good luck
Pete

Do these vintage trailers ever just work? Or is it use it one week, work
on it for months, use it a week, work on it......
I don't know yet where the water is coming from since I just rushed to
turn it off and mop it up. I also raised it as per Daisy's suggestion
(thanks) to have it tilt back and let the water drain.
There are some rubber hoses that some previous owner replaced bad copper
with. I had been in the process of replacing some dried up hoses on the
water pump input.
Are rubber hoses with clamps and acceptable repair?
I have to wait until I have some time to move the couches and such out of
the way and have someone turn the hose on briefly so I can find the problem.
Not looking forward to that ;-(

Don't give up! ;) You will remember these times and smile to yourself
in years to come just knowing that you were able to overcome this trailer's
problems. Isn't this what all vintage owners suffer from time to time?

I have been working on this trailer ('71 Safari) for a year and a
half. Put
thousands of dollars into it.

Each time I take The Silver Abaltross out something Goes wrong. this last 4
month trip the following 1st a rubber hose that was used for a repair burst
while we were away. people hunted us up to tell what water wag gushing out
othe underside of the trailer.
@nd a little later the bath sink fawect would not shut off. A quick trip to
home depot in Milwakee fixed that
3rd At a dump station at a roadside rest in WiS the handle pulled out of the
dump valve. Spent some time at another roadside rest chilisinf and access to
the gate so I ciuld hump it with a scrwedriver. It dumped in my lap. Thank
god I was parked between 2 semis so I could strip down before intering the
trailer. It was also raining so the parking lot cleaned its self.
4th one of the sweated joints in the plumming failed so I had to use the
storage tank the rest of the trip and the pump so as to keep pressure off the
system.
5th The airflow got blocked to my generator and I cooked the diesel motor.
Why do I keep beating my head against abrick wall? because it feels so good
when I quit.
O ne day I will have a trouble free trip.(meby when they are taking my ashes
to the VA cemetary.

Hey Tim,
Upside is it'll take a few low humidity days with windows open and cupboard
doors ajar to dry the floor. In terms of things that can go wrong while
doing a restoration, you lucked out.
Now that you've scrounged up portable fans and positioned them so their
stream of air is directed into every nook and cranny for a week, you can
take a break and make a new plan.
Just think - next week you'll have a dry floor and be right back at the same
point in time and space as you were before the flood. The only difference
will be you just had a week's vacation. Lucky duck.
Seriously, I know a flooded floor is no fun and being able to see the upside
is not easy. But you know you have to talk yourself out of any thoughts
about quitting. That's not in the cards for you. Perseverence is your only
choice and mastering the beast is your only option. < grin >
And that's that,
Terry

Tim,
Now that you are thinking 'right' again, glad you intend to carry on! ;)
I have water line problems in our 1969 29' International Ambassador. =
I've had blow outs from time to time and it's not fun to hear a hissing =
sound from "somewhere" in here! Usually the darn leaking copper pipe is =
a bear to get to but we've all been there or will go there one day as =
the owner of a vintage trailer.
In our case I think that the lines have frozen in the past, no, make =
that I KNOW the lines have frozen in the past. Copper can be forgiving =
to a point, it will stretch but then the sidewall of the tubing gets =
paper thin if it doesn't burst. Add in some hard water with it's high =
mineral content and soon you will be cleaning out the faucet screen =
aerators every time you go out. Most of us do that too.
Since the 'original' setup in ours was straight copper water lines I =
wanted to go that way again. The guy at Home Depot (there's always a =
guy somewhere at any Home Depot, yes?) questioned my sanity and =
suggested that in order to avoid buying even more parts I should go with =
copper tubing in a roll. Guess that guy had a point but maybe I like =
the 'warmth' a blow torch gives off? ;) I don't mind sweating joints =
together and even bought the asbestos cloth to keep down the fire damage =
claims to Allstate. Not really! But you have to be careful.
I personally would not go with rubber hose and clamps as a repair. An =
emergency repair? Yes, but not a permanent replacement. For one thing =
I don't know how sanitary or healthy a plain rubber hose would be =
thought we've all most likely taken a sip of water from a water hose or =
garden hose or even a 'hose pipe' as they are known in the South. ;)
"When" you have time to do this right, you might want to replace ALL the =
water lines eventually. You can buy a cap with hose threads (or hose =
pipe threads!) and then drill out the center of the cap and install a =
Shrader (?) air valve. This will then allow you to blow out the water =
lines but good! This is the good kind of good, Tim. ;) When you do =
this do it one faucet at a time, that is first the Cold then the Hot, at =
each faucet. You get the picture. When you are all done you will only =
have water in the drain traps which you can then add antifreeze to, this =
would all be done for winter storage if you don't plan to use it during =
that time of year.
And don't forget to 'bypass' the water heater most likely. I think we =
have a separate drain for *both* the water storage tank and the hot =
water heater.
Once I get ours fixed it will not be allowed to freeze again. Not on my =
watch! It's too darn hard to get those lines done more than once in my =
book, but it's necessary if you don't want any surprises miles away from =
home. And boy oh boy! Did you get a surprise tonight!
See, Tim? It could have been worse, it could have happened right after =
you got set up last weekend! Glad it didn't but it could have and your =
weekend would have been a wash. Pun intended. ;)
>From what I can see in your pictures you are doing a mighty good job, =
please keep up the good work. =20

Hi Tim,
Like most VAC list Airstream restorers/RVers, I have many frustrating
events that sometimes leave my restorations sitting for months and doubts
about the many thousands of dollars and time invested. I always come back
because the truth is, I like the challenge and the education. VAC list
contributors always bring me out of my doldrums.
For example, I've spent nearly two months trying to get my '74 Argosy on the
road for a vacation that was to begin during the first week of September.
First, I couldn't find a replacement toilet that fits the existing bathroom
design. Well, I can get along with a porta potty on the toilet shelf,
can't I?
So, I filled the new OPD propane tanks and decided to check the torsion
axles - yep, they are shot and have the dreaded positive angle - meaning no
springs and coach damage if I tow. Well, no problem as I've heard that
other restorers replaced axles. But, the preliminary cost for each of the
two axles is $1500 or $3000! :) Not in the budget for this year as I must
be in Baton Rouge, LA a few weeks from now.
Despite the axle setback, I ripped out the front gaucho, pulled the water
tank, and readied the floor for penetrating epoxy by drilling a zillion
holes in the 1/2 inch plywood flooring. On the side nearest the water
heater, the drill bit, drill and all went right through the floor. No
penetrating epoxy for this area and I must make a patch. No problemo, I've
been here before and I'm up to the task! :)
With regard to plumbing, my '74 Argosy was freeze damaged to the extent that
all copper plumbing is gone and replaced with PEX. Those joints where I
want to remove something like a water heater, I used quest fittings rather
than the crimp rings. PEX can take incredible bends and be held with clamps
as the new plumbing is snaked throughout the trailer. Also, PEX seems to
be the preferred installation by professionals for mobile homes, prebuilt
homes, SOB travel trailers, and new Airstreams. PEX can survive a freeze!
If leaks occur from freeze due to expansion of the compression rings, it's a
simple matter to fit the tool and restore the original crimp. :)
The tool to crimp PEX costs about $100, but I've used it to also replace all
the copper plumbing in the '69 Safari. The Safari didn't have freeze
damage, just nasty looking copper through out the coach. Replacement of
large floor sections in the bathroom required cutting out of much of the
copper anyway. I'm not a fan of trying to use a torch in confined areas.
Especially with today's higher melting temperature lead free solder.
If your coach had freeze damage in one area, you'll find that most of the
plumbing has damaged copper that will leak sooner or later. IMHO,
replacement of the all the copper is essential to trouble free use of the
coach.
I haven't hardly looked in the '69 Safari restoration for a year and the
belly is still hanging and waiting for me to button it up. Meanwhile, I
noticed that most of the panels are delaminating. :(
Yes, I'm frustrated and burned out from the continual finding of additional
near catastrophic circumstances that seem to appear unexpectedly. Then,
like you, a few days of reflection about all the successes of the past and
I'm back at it again. All the while thinking that the idea is to travel and
meet the great people of the VAC.
Keep the faith Tim, your setback is minor and can be easily overcome.
Harvey Barlow kept me encouraged to continue my restoration of the '69
Safari, despite what seemed overwhelming problems. You have an army of
support to help you through this small problem.
Regards, '74 Argosy
'69 Safari

Hey Tim ,
Just a little setback , but in every adversity is greater benefit .When you get
it fixed , it wont break again for a while ...
How many other 30 year old trailers did you see on the road on your trip ? I
know I`m not what I once was 30 years ago !
I feel bad for the folks who spend tens (or hundreds) of thousands on S.O.B.
trailers and motorhomes which will be landfill in 15 years . Lose thousands the
day they drive off the lot .
But I know how your feeling , been there . I wonder what I`m thinking
sometimes ...
dont stop now ,
Chris - 39 year old trailer , wont be on road for a year (or more ) , soon
selling the one I have on the road (only 35 y.o.) to raise funds for the other

Subject: Fantastic Fan Installation Questions
I will soon be the proud owner of two Fantastic Fans. I will be installing
them in the front and rear of my 1977 31' center bath Sovereign.
After going through the archives, there seems to be two camps as far as
installation of the Fantastic Fans goes. One uses Vulcum on the outer
gasket and flange, the other uses no Vulcum on the gasket & flange and only
seals the flange edge and screw heads after installation.
I would like to hear from of the "no Vulcum" folks to see if they have
experienced any leaks or problems.
Should I use stainless steel screws?
I called the manufacturer and they will be sending me the inside trim piece
for the Airstream for free. What nice folks!
Any other tips/hints or pointers?

I've got a 1959 that I just did a 4800 mile trip with and no problems. So
yes it is very possible to have a trailer that is trouble free. The key is
you really have to keep on top of the maintenance. Once all systems are
gone over and fixed, they will be reliable. You should expect old
appliances to fail at some point, unless you replace now.
I find my trailers to be more of a hobby. I've been were you are, you
discover something and think it will be impossible/expensive to fix, then
you walk away from it and as you think about it suddenly it gets easier to
fix. Plumbing is one of the easier fixes. Messy, but easy.
My biggest fustration was with polishing - spent many many hours on the 59
and when it was done had lots of swirl marks (that I could see) and if
someone had come along and given me a $100 for it I would have taken it.
We took the trailer camping and it was a people magnet - got lots of
comments on how beautiful it looked - and I had a blast - with renewed
interest. Now after several years of annual "maintenance polishing" the
swirl marks are minimal and it looks great.
So hang in there - after all we are having fun - aren't we?

Thanks for the suggestions...Yes, Burning Man was quite spectacular and I
advise anyone to experience it at least once in their lifetime (with their
Airstream of course). I tried cleaning the contacts on both sides of the
car connection and still no luck.
This may or may not be related to the running light problem, but there seems
to be some other electrical damage to the system as well, in that the
battery OR shore power when plugged in, is not transferring any power to the
trailer. Battery has been tested and is good. But it seems as if something
'tripped' when I tried attaching the low power generator. As I wrote in my
original e-mail, I seem to recall something about "automatically resetting"
breakers somewhere in the system. Does anyone know about these or where
they are or if they could be the problem?
Thanks again,
Yosef

Hi Wise Ones:
Me and the 67' Globetrotter just got back from a full week at the Burning
Man festival in Nevada's Black Rock desert and ran into an electrical
problem:
After the batter finally died from running the interior lights and water
pump, i tried recharging it via a gas powered generator using an adaptor for
the shore power plug. It didn't work -maybe too weak a generator -1000
watts.
I dont know if I shorted anything or if this happened for a different
reason, but now the brake lights and turn signals no longer work when
plugged into my Jeep. I checked the two visible fuses in the battery
compartment, I reset the two circuit breakers in the rear...
What do these symptoms indicate? I seem to recall something about some
"automatically resetting" breakers somewhere in the system.
Thanks,

Thanks everyone for the encourgement.
I'm glad that you can have a trouble free trailer at some point. I am one
of those personallities that does not mine working hard on something, but I
want to reap what I sow.
It seems the best thing to do is redue the whole plumbing system (water
supply side) with PEX. Does anyone have any pictures of their redone
plumbing? I'd like to see what I am dealing with since I am not a plumber.
Of course I wasn't a floor installer, cabinet builder, appliance installer,
window repairman, or riviter either. ;-)

Definitely use SS screws whenever you can. Fantastic Fans comes with an
inside trip piece that works perfectly on the Airstream. I don't understand

Hey, Tim -- Thanks!
It's good to know I'm not the only one that has gotten
overwhelmed by these trials and tribulations.
You should've seen me about a year ago when I found I
could no longer face the 4'x8' exposure of rusted frame
(and the lawn beneath it) that used to be my rear bath.
It was good to walk away, and not come back until I
was of the proper mindset. That took quite awhile.
But now the bathroom is back in over a new, solid floor.
Just needs caulked and new flooring laid down. I'm on
to the closets now, working my way forward rebuilding
and refreshing, planning and modifying. Parts of it are
fun, other parts are a real pain. The end result will
be mine, and I know I'll feel darn good about that.
I didn't think the whole thing would take as long as it
already has, but hey -- nothing's ever easy.

After you wrote back I went to carefully check the same mag and I gotta

BTW: There are three vintage Airstreams and one Avion in the RV Trader. If
