This is a consequence of current policy (which is not likely to change, AFAIK).

Policy for stable releases is that updates can only be made for critical bug and
security fixes.  Thus, a stable release can not transition from FF2 to FF3.

8.04 is an LTS (long-term support) release, which means it is supported on the
desktop for up to three years.  Naturally, no one will want to be running FF2 in
2010, so a commitment to that version has to be made at release time.  It's one
of those situations where releas timing was not ideal.

I should note that 8.04 has FF2 packages that can be installed along-side FF3,
so if users want to use FF2, it's only an apt-get away.

I'm sure Gentoo doesn't have policies, so this isn't a problem for you, Josh. :)
