BTW, Here we're talking about being on consoles. For example, on virtual console #3, you'll press "Alt + h" or "Alt + SysRq" to switch to the system console.
In X, you'll press "Alt + Ctrl + h" or "Alt + Ctrl + SysRq" to switch to the system console.
