So let's do it. This is a level of coding that even I can bite off if folks agree it's the Right Thing To Do. (I figure it isn't much more than moving a little code and re-writing some docs.)

I think the *best* thing to do is this - do it right, and put in tools. Leave the existing one for backwards compatibility and easy of examples (so you don't have to go get both just play with it.)
Then, everything is backwards compatible, there are no problems with fixing things that should be fixed (because you won't break anything because of the different package), and you can do it at your leisure.
It also helps drive use of tools - "So you like VelocityServlet? Look at o.a.v.t.XXXXX..."
