Hi Keith and Deb........cool tip Deb. Keith, i wish you could come to the demo i'm doing tonight. I'll be doing bodies using a dubbing loop. It's very easy actually. Just take your thead and pull down six inches or so, (more or less), and then bring it back up to the shank and over and around itself to lock it. Now you have a loop that cannot come undone. Advance the thread at least to where you know you will be ending up after wrapping. Wax the back side of the loop if you like, both sides if you like, or don't use any wax, that's up to you. Insert your materials in the loop and collasps the loop on the materials so they can't fall out (another reason to use a bit of wax), attach hackle pliers, and twist to the degree you like. I twist clockwise, until my materials are gathered to my likeing but not to where i loose some spikyness depending on the materials being used. When i do salmon fly bodies this way, i always pick them out afterwards also. It's a nice effect to have the bodies look as though they have hackle in them (wheather they actually do or not) by picking them out. I gotta go Bro. I'll show you during the "Gathering" in June. mark.....................

Keith
There is a book called Hair-Hackle Tying Techniques & Fly Patterns by Gordon Mackenzie. Frank Amato Publications. ISBN 1-57188-229-4 for the spiral bound version. A most excellent book for flies tied with this method. He has some beautiful salmon and steelhead patterns in it. You could work from these ideas. I picked mine up at Barnes and Noble.

Subject: [VFB] dubbing loop

I am looking to produce some Spey flies that use a dubbing loop with arctic fox or rabbit strips. This may sound amateurish but I have never used a dubbing loop. Could someone help me?????

  Thanks Folks
