Ah, but the missing ingredient here is DESIGN. It is much (x10) simpler to design the pieces than to make them all work together. Vim is designed as something simple with the possibility of considerable extension. I think that is quite beautiful in itself. To get to something more complex requires an architect with some particular vision that contibutors can follow.
