I think Jobs saw the Apple was about to fall off the tree because IBM and Motorola have had problems increasing the clock speed of every version of the PowerPC since the G3 while AMD and Intel have zipped ahead, easily transitioning to new materials and fabrication techniques every time their current designs hit thier "Mhz barrier". With Intel producing 4ghz CPUs, no amount of advertising hype or synthetic benchmark tests is going to convince (or actually proove) that the PowerPC CPU really is faster. If IBM and Motorola could somehow produce at least a 3Ghz CPU, with "room" for the design to scale to at least 5Ghz, within the next 2~3 months, then Jobs might reconsider the switch.
