I strongly support Tom's advice of being cautious.
I had the procedure done on my 68 bug a few months back. I think its the most
difficult procedure on a VW. The old timer who did it always displays one of
his index fingers which was crushed and mangled by a VW springplate gone
naughty.
So please do your homework and start only when confident of the steps and
take all the precautions you can.
