Asad - there is less room between the fuel pump used on a generator-equipped
VW and an alternator-equipped VW. So when VW introduced the alternator,
they also made a shorter and squattier fuel pump with a shorter fuel pump
pushrod so that you would not have any clearance issues.

I did prove one time though that you CAN run a generator style fuel pump on
an alternator-equipped engine. I took a ball peen hammer and carefully
dented the cap in. After some trial fits, it finally went in there but you
had to remove the cap, install the pump, then put the cap on. So it's nice
to know in an emergency that you could get away with it.
