Mary,

Do you have the speech set to the maximum speed? I have to admit this one sure 
has me stumped. You could possibly take the extreme and reblast the software, 
but this involves getting a mini USB cable to standard USB connection so you 
can hook it to your computer and download the firmware via iTunes. I assume 
this can be done on a PC as can be done on a Mac. ALthough this should be 
reserved as a last-ditch effort. Have you tried resetting the device?
